Petition for the Advancement of a Just and Jewish Marriage

Thousand of Jewish women are agunot or victims of get refusal.

Thousands waive their basic rights in exchange for a Jewish bill of divorce (a get). The reason for this is that according to Jewish law, divorce is contingent upon the will and ability of a husband to deliver a get to his wife. If a husband does not want, or physically cannot, deliver a get to his wife, she can remain anchored to him for an indefinite period of time.

There are other ways!

It is possible to prevent this problem within the framework of Jewish law through the halakhic mechanism of  “contingent betrothal.” Separation for a period of 15 months can bring about the end of the marriage without depending on the husband’s good will.

We, the undersigned, appeal to marry in accordance with the laws of Moses and Israel, with Justice and with Righteousness.

We call on our rabbis and community leaders to support “Conditional Betrothals” and to encourage the signing of documents that would allow couples to marry in such a way that would prevent, and even solve, the problem of aginut and get refusal.
