Dr. Susan Weiss, Executive Director and Founder of the Center for Women’s Justice was honored to be named the 55th Tikkun Olam Awardee by the Haiti Jewish Refugee Legacy Project.
Harriet and Bill Mohr, a San Francisco Bay Area couple, founded the Haiti Jewish Refugee Legacy Project. The Mohrs sought to discover more about the Haiti Jewish refugee experience, via connecting with people who fled Europe during WW II and found safe haven in Haiti, and/or their descendants.
In 2010, the Mohrs instituted the ‘Tikkun Olam Award’ with the goal of recognizing individuals and organizations that give prominence to Haiti’s special role in saving Jewish refugees’ lives during the Holocaust, and who build bridges to new understanding of the current connection between the Jewish and Haitian people. The project began shortly after the Haiti earthquake in January 2010.
In November 2010, the Mohrs expanded the scope of award recipients to include individuals who have mad e a significant impact in repairing the world.
Dr. Weiss was recognized for her efforts to foster the basic human rights of Jewish women in Israel to equality, dignity and justice within Jewish Law. CWJ is proud of this prestigious distinction bestowed on our Director.
